What is the Boxwalla Book Box?

Receive two books every two months that focus on great writers from all over the world. We will showcase both potential Nobel Laureates as well as classics hiding in the past.

What's in the August Book Box:

1) Percival Everett's Erasure (Los Angeles, U.S.A) : What can we say about this brilliant book that will actually convey its brilliance?! Part satire, part skillfully restrained family saga, this novel is absurd & profound, hilarious and moving. From one of the great novelists of our time. NPR called Everett "America's most under-recognized literary master". We agree.

2) Mercè Rodoreda's Garden by the Sea (Barcelona, Spain): An indescribably beautiful novel that is set in the seaside near Barcelona. We could describe it as Great Gatsby meets Wuthering Heights meets Downton Abbey, but saying just that wouldn't convey its gentle, haunting beauty. Roderoda was also a great favorite of Gabriel Garcia Marquez who said that she "had bedazzled me by the sensuality with which she reveals things in the atmosphere of her novels. The most important Catalan writers of the 20th Century.

3) 12" Vinyl Record from Third Man Records, The Best of Mississippi John Hurt

PLEASE NOTE: we are sold out of the MISSISSIPPI John Hurt vinyl. For new subscription orders billed after August 7 - we will be including another beautiful LP from the American Epic series: either Memphis Jugband or Blind Willie McTell. Also from THIRD MAN RECORDS.

Mississipi John Hurt was a Blues fingerpicking guitarist, singer & sharecropper. He was born in Toec, Mississippi in 1893, & raised in Avalon. He first recorded his music in 1928 with Okeh talents scout. According to the John Hurt Foundation, his music "sold moderately well, their greater success stalled by the Depression & a refusal on Okeh’s part to market John’s music outside of traditional “race record” categorization. John returned to Avalon to await further work from Okeh. The call would never come, & John was relegated once again to seeming obscurity".

He was 're-discovered' in the 1960s owing to a fan & record collector who went to Avalon on a hunch (based on the song 'Avalon Blues that John Hurt had recorded in 1928). From Third Man Records: "His moving renditions of “Frankie” & “Spike Driver Blues” were included in Harry Smith’s American Anthology of Folk Music in 1952 & were vitally influential on the Greenwich Village folk music revival of the 1960s...." He passed away in 1966.

This set contains a compilation of 13 songs, & was restored from the original 1928 Okeh recording using new sound restoration techniques including reverse engineering. It was released as a vinyl record by Third Man Records, as an accompaniment to the American Epic documentary film series made in 2017 based on the first recordings of roots music in the U.S during the 1920s.
