H is for Love
Seattle, Washington hforlove.com

H is for Love is Bee Ham's paen to the natural ingredients that she fell in love with.  H stands for the History that these ingredients carry and for Honoring the traditions associated with them. We have to admit - H is also for How loved our skin feels when we use Bee's wonderfully crafted products. When we first opened BARA balm and breathed in, we realized we'd stumbled on something special. And the same was true of the other products form the line. Yet the scents were never superfluous but seemed to belong to the product, like the voices of the ingredients. And when we actually used the products we experienced their efficacy : they worked as beautifully as they smelled.

Bee runs H is for Love along with her husband Jae and we were thrilled to be able to showcase her work : the Bara Balm and Lip Glacé in the February 'Secret Garden' box.

What's your favorite thing about being a small business owner?

I love that my job requires creativity - my brain certainly never gets tired. I’m challenged adequately in most areas, and I’m one of those people who absolutely needs that. My other favorite thing is connecting with human beings on a level that cuts right through all the surface stuff. Being invited into an intimate part of someones life is an honor, and although it isn’t me personally there in each bathroom or on each counter top, there’s a trust formed which I take seriously with those who use my products. I make each creation with much thought and intention and I find myself in such a state of gratitude when someone shares that they really made a connection or experienced the results they were hoping for. Joy!

Where can we find you when you aren't working on developing your beautiful products?

Spending time with my precious children, fitness, frequenting our local juice bar, walking my old lady dog, and sometimes, when I’m not completely beat at the end of the day - which is rare these days - watching a movie with Jae, who is the other half of H and my husband, the one who does a lot of the behind the scenes work. He’s a great partner because he always watches the movies I want to watch. Which basically means we’ve only watched government/espionage/war thrillers for the last 7 years.

What is your most loved skincare ingredient and how did you discover it?

I’ve had a love affair with each as I’ve discovered them over the years. But, to look at our ingredient decks a theme does seem to emerge. I favor carrier oils that have a small molecular size, and I build our formulations around those. I love using supercritical extracts for their purity and integrity. If I had to choose one oil to take to a desert island (this is how I have to answer the question, it has to be extreme since those are the only circumstances under which I would choose just one) it would have to be something that nourished my hair, skin, and lips. The island better have fresh water somewhere because I would need to prep my skin, of course. If it had coconuts I would be set! I could live on coconuts and use their juice as a perfect face mist. If I could add another it would be sea buckthorn CO2. Oh, the healing powers of that oil! Highly regenerative, famous in folklore and for good reason. I use it as an oil in BARA Balm and as a CO2 in Nectar and Lip Glacé. I even use it in my dental care routine. It’s a wonder oil!

Your favorite product from your line?

POLLEN. 100% necessary - Pollen does so much more than your typical toner or mist. Not only is it a delight to the senses, but it’s a mild astringent, so it tightens, works to correct hyper-pigmentation, hydrates, provides anti-bacterial protection, brightens, balances the pH of skin after cleansing with tap water, preps skin for oil, and sets makeup with that dewy glow.

A skincare myth you'd like to debunk?

That some miracle product can create glowing, healthy skin IF the body isn’t healthy to begin with. That is to say, skincare is only skin deep. I’m an outspoken proponent of eating organic, real foods. Since skin is the last to receive nutrients, it will be the first to show signs of internal discord. If we want healthy skin, in tandem with good skincare, we must give our bodies what they really need. Nourishment from the inside out. It’s true that many suffer skin conditions brought on by harsh products or habits. But clean, organic, natural skincare practices must be used in conjunction with healthy living in order achieve gorgeous and consistent results! I have a desire in the deepest part of my soul to help free people from the vicious cycle of viewing the body as anything but a whole - related to all other facets of life and living.

What is one super power you'd love to have?

To heal people with one touch.

A fun fact about you?

I was once Little Miss California. I really considered not sharing that, but what the heck! Still cracks me up.

The next place you'd love to travel to?

This is my favorite question! Up until I started having children I was blessed to leave the country at least once a year. Sometimes I would leave a job because a trip was more important. Traveling the world is in my blood. It’s the adventure and the unknown that I miss.  I’m in the process of planning a trip to Papua New Guinea for next year. Next I need to go to Marrakech, we’ve talked about Italy, and Santorini’s always been on the list. Jae wants to go to Bali but I’ve been there a couple of times…ha. If I were choosing based on food alone, of all the countries I’ve visited, I would immediately return to Rome and eat all the gnocchi and pistachio gelato in sight!
